Think of it the way you'd think about training volume. Nobody asks how many workouts it takes to get stronger without first asking what "stronger" means to them and where they're starting from. HBOT is similar. A hospital treating radiation tissue injury is aiming at a biological change that takes weeks of repeated exposure to accumulate. Someone using the chamber after a hard training block is chasing something much smaller and much faster, and the honest read on that use is that the evidence is genuinely mixed.

So there are really two conversations happening under the same question, and they have very different answers.

What the Clinical Protocols Actually Look Like

The FDA has cleared hyperbaric oxygen devices for a specific list of medical conditions, including decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene, certain non-healing diabetic foot ulcers, delayed radiation injury, compromised skin grafts, and thermal burns.1 These are hospital and accredited-facility treatments delivered under a physician's care, and they come with defined protocols.

Two things stand out in that table. The clinical courses are long, and they're daily. Twenty sessions spread over four months is not the same dose as twenty sessions over four weeks, and the protocols that produced the strongest evidence were front-loaded and consistent.

The second thing worth saying plainly: those cleared indications are treatments for diagnosed medical conditions, and they belong in an accredited hyperbaric facility with a physician managing the case. Recovery and wellness use of a chamber is a different thing, and it should be described as a different thing.

What the Research Says About Recovery and Wellness Use

This is where most people asking about session counts actually are, so it deserves an honest summary rather than a sales pitch.

For exercise recovery specifically, the evidence is inconsistent. A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis of hyperbaric oxygen before, during, and after exercise found no significant effect on performance or recovery when the sessions were delivered before or after exercise, with a possible signal for muscle endurance when delivered during exercise.4 Delayed onset muscle soreness trials have been consistently negative going back decades, including a controlled study that found no meaningful difference in DOMS recovery after eccentric work.5 If someone tells you HBOT is proven to fix soreness, the literature doesn't back that up.

The picture is somewhat more interesting for actual soft-tissue and sports injuries, where reviews describe treatment blocks of roughly 3 to 10 sessions and some studies reported faster return to normal training.4 Those studies are small and the quality varies, so it's a signal worth knowing about rather than a settled finding.

On the longevity side, the most cited work is a 2020 prospective trial in Aging that ran 35 healthy adults aged 64 and up through 60 daily 90-minute sessions at 2 ATA and reported increased telomere length in isolated blood cells along with a decrease in senescent T cells.3 Those results are striking, and they're also from a single small trial without a control arm, measuring cellular markers rather than how anyone felt or functioned. Research suggests something is happening at that dose. It does not yet tell us that a handful of sessions produces anything similar, and the honest framing is that this is an emerging area.

What all of that adds up to: repeated exposure over a compressed window is what the promising research has in common. Occasional single sessions are not what any of these studies tested.

A Realistic Way to Plan Your First Block

Here's how we'd suggest thinking about it if you're using HBOT for recovery, training, or general wellness rather than a diagnosed condition.

Start with one session to learn the chamber. Pressure changes are a physical sensation, mostly in your ears, and some people need a visit or two to get comfortable with equalizing. Treat the first session as orientation. You're finding out whether you can relax in there for an hour, not evaluating results.

Then commit to a real block. Five to ten sessions across two to four weeks gives you enough repeated exposure to notice a pattern, and it's small enough that you're not sinking months into something unproven for you personally. Consistency inside that window matters more than the total number.

Track something specific. Pick one or two markers before you start: sleep quality, morning stiffness, how you feel two days after your hardest training session, mental clarity in the afternoon. Vague impressions three weeks later are almost impossible to interpret. Specific ones aren't.

Then decide. If the block did nothing for you, that's real information and you've spent a manageable amount to get it. What to Know Before You Book

Middle ear barotrauma is the most common complication of hyperbaric therapy, and it happens when the eustachian tube doesn't let air in fast enough to equalize pressure in the middle ear.6 It's usually manageable with equalizing technique and a slower descent, and it's the main reason to speak up during a session rather than push through discomfort.

There are also real contraindications. Untreated pneumothorax is an absolute one, as is a history of bleomycin treatment and certain ongoing chemotherapy agents.2 Active upper respiratory infections, recent ear surgery, uncontrolled seizure disorders, and some lung conditions all warrant a conversation before you book. The FDA also issued a letter to health care providers in August 2025 reinforcing the importance of following manufacturer instructions for hyperbaric device safety after reports of fires and injuries, which is a good reminder that where you do this matters.7

One more thing worth saying because the internet is full of the opposite: hyperbaric oxygen is not a cleared treatment for Long COVID, traumatic brain injury, autism, or stroke recovery. Research is ongoing in several of those areas, and none of them are cleared indications. Anyone advertising HBOT as a treatment for them is ahead of both the evidence and the regulator.
